Since it’s a frequent topic of conversation here at the blog, it seemed like a good idea to link to some resources on a separate page. So here ya go.
My Writing
The Importance of Social Memory – A brief response to Katongole’s first chapter in The Sacrifice of Africa.
National Boundaries Mean Nothing in the Kingdom of God – A response to Dinesh D’Souza’s shockingly ignorant piece of drivel printed in Forbes about colonialism.
The Veiled Redeemer – Kwame Nkrumah and the United States, 1951-1966. If you really want to geek out, here is my thesis from my undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln completed under the advisement of Drs. Lloyd Ambrosius and James LeSueur.
Other blogs and websites
All Africa – An excellent collection of newspaper articles from all over Africa. Great resource.
Emmanuel Katongole – A scholar at Duke and author of a number of books, including The Sacrifice of Africa.
Paradox Uganda – The blog of a couple doctors working in Uganda.
Books
The Fate of Africa by Martin Meredith – A helpful basic introduction to post-colonial Africa.
Half a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Adichie – An excellent novel by a young Nigerian about the Nigeria/Biafra wars of the 1960s.
King Leopold’s Ghost by Adam Hochschild – A chilling but essential account of Leopold II’s colonizing of the Congo.
Mistaking Africa by Curtis Keim - An excellent and very easy-to-read introduction for westerners.
The Sacrifice of Africa by Emmanuel Katongole - You simply must read this.
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe – Perhaps the single most famous novel by an African author. It’s fame is well deserved.
What is the What by Dave Eggers – Ordinarily I’m not a huge Eggers fan. But this book is an excellent semi-biographical account of one of Sudan’s lost boys. Extremely important to read if you’re interested in the issues related to African refugees in the USA.
And of course, anything Basil Davidson has ever written.
